President's Message

Michelle Pruitt Studstill

Well fellow Bar members, time surely flies. It feels as if only yesterday I wad writi

Studstill, Michelle Pruit 57536

ng my first President's message in the summer and here we are today, the  Holidays are fast approaching, and the end of 2017 is on the horizon.  the Mix and Mingle held on Wednesday, November 2nd  was a great success!  Many of our Judges and General Magistrates were in attendance.  Several traveling from Seminole Count to attend.  I am always grateful for the support of our Judiciary.  I was sad to have missed such a great event but was making my way across the Atlantic on a transatlantic cruise. t hank you Geoff Golub and Guna Ose for planning such a great event!  Also, I would like to say a very special "Thank you" to Alan H. Landman, PA and Alpizar Law for sponsoring this event.

December brings several CLE opportunities.  Elizabeth Harris will be presenting the final CLE in her Appellate Law series at n oon on December 6, 2017.  This CLE will be held in the Law Library and is free to members.  The BCBA is also partnering with the Vassar B. Carlton Inn of Court to offer an Attorney Ad Litem CLE at 5:30 p.m., December , 2017, at the Space Coast Conference Center in Cocoa.  More information on this CLE can be found on the BCBA website (www.brevardbar.org).

Finally, we are feverishly planning our largest event of the year,  our annual BCBA Holiday  party.  The Holiday Party will be held December  8, 2017 at the Melbourne Beach Hilton.  It is always a nice event and many welcome the opportunity to socialize with fellow BCBA members during such a festive time of the year.  Please remember to RSVP for the event on the BCBA website and make sure to bring cash with you as our popular basket raffle is returning again this year.

This year, the proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Women's Center of South Brevard. Jackie Ares, Victim Advocate of the Women's Center said that this time of year is always the most difficult time of year for the Center and for families.  Each holiday season, many women and children are displaced from their homes as a result of domestic violence.

The Women's Center assists these families by helping them with basic needs such as safe housing, food, and clothing.  This time of year is particularly difficult for these families as the Women's Center does not have the resources to assist families in celebrating the holidays.  This means children are not only displaced from their homes, many in safe houses or shelters with strangers, but also do not understand why there is no Christmas tree, Menorah, Dreidel, or other holiday tradition this year.  Why Santa visits their classmates' homes to leave gifts but forgets to leave one for him or her.  Why there are no Chanukah gifts.  The proceeds from the basket raffle this year will go to the Women's Center to insure these children too, are able to celebrate the holidays.

I look forward to seeing you all at the upcoming CLEs and the Holiday Party!
